Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
