The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
