Individuals who experienced abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the Pope's decision to engage with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Global Strict Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a worldwide zero-tolerance policy that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the position in spring, has inherited this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to canon law to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they expressed. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty countries, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey noted the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and receptive and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Changes

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will enable the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," they noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released church-ordered document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and establishing a connection and persisting to build that bond is a move in the correct path," they stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
